As Kethu is not a benefic to natives with Makara ascendant, no benefits could be expected from him. As Rahu is a good friend of Sani, the lord of the ascendant, the other end being Kethu, would give favours in particular conditions, when he attains sookshma (intricate) strength and is associated or connected to the benefics of the ascendant like Sukra or Budha.

At the same time, when Kethu conjoins Sani, the lord of Makara, he would lose his malefic tendencies, gain subathuva (beneficence) in spiritual matters and give away favours.  When conjoined with Sani, Kethu never gives evil effects to Makara.

If we need to clearly understand what has been conveyed in our scriptures, in that Kethu acts like Mangal and Rahu gives results similar to Sani, in some situations if we could assume Kethu as Mangal and not as Kethu, we would be able to decode the good and bad effects expected.

For example, to the natives of Makara ascendant, Mangal is the Bhadakadhipathi (Lord of obstruction) and if we correlate with the fact that Kethu is like Mangal, some truths could be realised.

When Kethu that is placed in the ascendant is associated with Sani and also is in the aspect or association of Guru, then, there is a conjunction of all the three spiritually oriented planets, Guru, Sani and Kethu at the ascendant, driving the native towards spirituality or spiritual places and give a strong spiritual inclination during the dasas (major periods) of these planets.

It is also important that for reaching a completeness in spirituality, connection with no other planets other than the aforesaid three planets is essential. But, if Kethu gains the association of any other planet then depending on the ownership or significations of these planets,l the results will vary for either better or for worse.

Next, the placement of Kethu, in the 2nd house (Kumbha), has been indicated to be very favourable in our scriptures as that happens to be the fixed house owned by Sani and when Kethu is placed in Kumbha, he would never give bad results to any of the ascendants.

Hence, Kethu when placed in the 2nd house with the association of Sukra and/or Budha and not in the Satabhisham star, would give favourable results.

An important subtle point here is that Rahu-Kethu do not give good results, when placed in their own stars. Also, placement of Rahu in the star owned by Kethu or Kethu placed in the star owned by Rahu is also not greatly beneficial.

This is because, if in a horoscope, Rahu is placed so as to become a benefic, Kethu would be placed in  a diametrically opposite house in an unfavourable configuration. For example, placement of Rahu-Kethu in the  3rd and 11th houses have been attributed to give positive results as per our scriptures. If Rahu-Kethu happen to be placed in the 3rd-11th houses, then the opposite node would be placed either in the 9th or 5th houses that are diametrically opposite to the 3rd and 11th houses respectively.

While the 3rd and 11th houses being the “upachaya houses” that have been attributed by our sages to be favourable for the placement of malefic planets like  Rahu-Kethu, it has also been indicated that the Rahu-Kethu placed in angular/trinal houses would give favourable results only after spoiling the functionalities of the houses they are placed in, during their dasa(major period)/bhukti(sub-period).

For example, when the serpentine planets are in the 4th house then the favourable effects would follow, only after ruining the functionalities of the 4th house being education, mother, house and vehicle. Snakes in the 7th house would spoil the marital life and at the same time give financial upliftment. When in the 10th house, would make the profession vulnerable and give good results only after changes.

Similarly, when the serpentine planets run their dasas being placed in trinal houses like 5th or 9th, then would give good results of 5th house only after affecting the functionalities of the house like loss of child, enmity with child, longing for a child or inability to have children.

When in the 9th house, father is affected. Also, all that matters connected to father would be missed. Further results could be expected  only after bringing in enmity with paternal relatives, inability to enjoy ancestral property etc.

On this basis only, it has been told that in any horoscope, always Rahu-Kethu would be seated in a such a way that one is in good and other is in bad placements and hence, Rahu being placed in the star of Kethu or Kethu being placed in the star of Rahu does not give good results.

To put it differently, when Kethu is placed in the 2nd house for a Makara ascendant in the Satabhisham star, then Rahu would function as the 8th lord, seated in the 8th house. Hence,  the star on which Rahu is seated in the 8th house, would not give beneficial results.

The basic tenement governing the effects of dasa/bhukti is that the planet during his dasa, would give the results of the lord of the star he is placed in or in other words the star-lord of his placement, based on the houses owned by the star-lord, through the house in which he (the star lord) is seated.

This rule is a very fundamental rule in Vedic Astrology, that helps in making predictions accurately in any horoscope on the occurrence and timing of events in the life of a native.  Only when this basic fundamental tenement is understood well, will anyone be able to make clear predictions in any horoscope.

To extend this further, the next dimensions of traditional Vedic astrology being “Saara Jothidam” (astrology on the basis of placement in a star), “Nakshatra Jothidam”(stellar astrology) or K.P. System that thrives on predictions based on sub-star, have all emanated from this rule only.

For example, to a horoscope with Mithuna ascendant and Rahu being placed in the 12th house in the Mrigasira star and Mangal, the star-lord placed in the 3rd house, then Rahu would get connected to the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses through Mangal.

As Mangal, the star-lord of Rahu, is placed in the 3rd house, in the house(Simha) that is considered to be a very favourable and friendly house to  Mangal and since he would gain subathuva (beneficence) here, during the dasa of Rahu, he would give favourable or unfavourable results through the 6th and 11th houses, through the favourable functionalities of the 3rd house like  courage, boldness, music, writing, fame, jewellery, ears etc.

To predict the favourable or unfavourable effects of Rahu accurately here, aspects like whether the Rishaba house, where he is placed, is favourable, whether the 12th Bhava(house) is good or bad, the status of Sukra, the house-lord, planets associated with Rahu, if so, the proximity of association in degrees, planet aspecting Rahu, is the star-lord or the house-lord is in” Sashtashtaga”(one is in 8th or 6th to other) position and the status of Rahu in Navamsa (9th divisional) chart, need to be considered.

Hence, it is easier to accurately predict the effects of placement of Rahu-Kethu in the stars owned by other planets. But, it is extremely difficult to make predictions, when Rahu-Kethu are placed in their own stars or in the stars of each other’s.

For example, it would require extreme intellect, to predict whether Rahu placed in the Satabisham star in Kumbha, Arudra star in Mithuna or Swathi star in Tula yield good or bad results. Similarly, it is equally difficult to make predictions on the effects of Kethu, when he is placed in Aswini star in Mesha or Makha star in Simha or in Moola star in Dhanu.
